Also known as Wireless Fideltiy, Wi-Fi was invented by NCR Corporation/AT&T in the Netherlands for use in cashier systems. It is used today for networking electronic devices together, mostly laptops and PDAs. It has become increasing popular due to there not being any wires necessary for the devices and wireless routers to connect to each other.
A Wi-Fi Hotspot is the area within the range of a wireless router that computers such as laptops and PDA's can connect to for access to the internet. Usually found by compiled lists, a sign, or a Wi-Fi Finder, hotspots can range in price for access from free to an hourly or monthly access fee. Several businesses, such as coffee houses, have setup Wi-Fi hotspots so that their customers can connect to the internet to do things like check e-mail, surf the web, or even connect to the computers back at the office to be able to access information.
